netball

Today I had the fun time of playing netball.

Now, I thought netball was another name for basketball but I was incredibly wrong. This is okay though because I ended up having a lot of fun. All the girls knew I was from the states because of the way I shot but I just thought the whole idea of no dribbling, touching, or stealing incredibly girly! I mean, how do you play a sport without any contact. Plus, there is no backboard!

Well luckily Louisa was there to teach me the ropes. She was just like: "keep your hands at your sides at all time" I'm just thinking this is crazy.

I did have fun though and met some really nice people. Theres a social tonight so hopefully thats fun.

I'm lieu of the fact that I will be moving soon into a flat I don't want any confusion with packages sent to me. It is best to send anything to this address that way I know I'll get it.

Surfing

So I finally went surfing.

I had so much fun! I'm incredibly hooked. I'm persuaded to move to CA and buy a beach house and surf everyday. I woke up this morning and was incredibly sore. I will have to work on building muscle. But other than that I'm learning. I'm completely rubbish when it comes to balance and I haven't quite mastered the trick to standing on my board but I am determined to figure it out.

The sun was amazing. It was my favorite part. I went surfing with the club team and we loaded the bus and went. We surfed until the sun set and the water became too cold to surf in. It was beautiful. Something I could do everyday.

I was miserable getting that wet suite off. I couldn't feel my hands and it just stuck to me. I pretty much gave up and with the help of Rose pried it off my body. I was freezing in the wind and the cold. I guess it was worth it.

After a good day of surfing I went and hungout with the surf club members at a surf social. It was amusing. Hopefully I'll meet more people later on!

So I met this girl tonight named Louisa. She's a very nice girl. Anyway, she convinced me to join her netball team and go snowboarding with her. Uhm yes... this could be interesting! Especially since they snowboard on a kind of wet foam (aka not snow!) I'll have to let you know how that goes. All the people here are fascinated that I've done ice hockey. They just don't understand how somebody could skate on ice with a puck and pads for fun! I tell them to try it before they hate on it! I am determined to watch cricket play when I'm here. Luckily, Louisa is very sporty so she can tell me when things are good. She also has an amazing music collection (her words not mine) so I've been told that I haven't heard good music until I hear hers. Uhm we'll see!

visit?

So I miss home. Not in the technical sense but rather the fact that I don't see familiar faces all the time. I don't miss seeing the same things and I definitely don't miss Pullman or home really. Especially the weather and the same-o-same-0. Honestly most thoughts like this don't cross my mind because they don't bother me [aka I love it here] but there are some moments when I wish my friends and family were here to have fun with me. We could go surfing together, or lay by the beach, or just sit in the JC's bar and watch the rugby game over a pint

I think someone should come visit me.

seriously.

Everybody here is going home to somewhere in Europe or having family come visit them.

this makes me kind of sad :(

I can tell you the itinerary. maybe this will persuade you... or make you feel bad for not coming and seeing me! lol.

first week: Scotland to see Nancy then London
second week: Paris for a few days then Grenoble to see the Kleins at their camp and ski the Swiss Alps
3rd week: Hang with the Kleins at their home in France and visit Swizterland and Germany while I'm there.
4th week: Madrid, Spain then off to surf camp in Portugal or Morocco
5th week: To Florence, Italy to see Jessica for a few days. Fly out from Rome to go home to Basil

Yea, I think you should come over!
I'll meet you in Florence...

what I'm doing

Rebekah's notes:
  1. Tax is included in the listed cost. It is not added on per dollar as it is in the states. If its 3.42 its that exact price.
  2. The sun does amazing things for you mood
  3. The 99 pence shop across from the pound shop are the best places to shop
  4. Guys here show more undergarments than back home. seriously. They'll wear their jackets which ride up because they are European cut thus exposing there underwear and semi sagging jeans. They seem to not have a problem with this I find it completely unappealing. And we though American kids sagged too much.
  5. Some older people here are monotone [possibly because of their accent]. (I went to a theology discussion/lecture. I about fell asleep to this Cambridge scholar speaking about God in an age of technology. I thought it would be somewhat exciting. I was very wrong).
  6. People don't eat their chips with forks in McDonald. Why? nobody knows. This is the only place it is socially acceptable to eat your chips with your fingers.
  7. Speaking of McDonalds. They don't have a pound menu. okay they kind of do but not really. I don't eat out anyway so I guess I don't really care.

So, what have I been up to... Where have I been.... Good question.

Tonight I went to the Christian Union meeting for international students. I got to hear live music which is always nice and I ate some traditional Welsh food. We had fish and chips. yea, I know it doesn't sound very Welsh but trust me... the fish here taste much different and I've already gone over how much I hate the chips here as well. Everything seems to taste different even the pop. Well... I'm used to it now so I know that going back to America is going to be rough. I met some really nice people and I think I'm going to find a church to go to that is really nice. Apparently there are tons of churches here so I can make my rounds and pick. Interestingly enough, there is no such thing as a non-denominational church here. Everybody picks something and is exclusive to their denomination. But I guess if you had a church called "the church of England aka Anglican Church" I'd be the same way. I met some really nice people there and the group is smaller than at home which is nice. I don't really want to be another face in the crowd. This week is Christian week so they have quite a bit of events happening within the Chaplaincy. Which is actually quite neat. They have a Chaplaincy in Fulton where they have different Chaplains from different sects/denominations/faiths who are there to speak to students. very interesting. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised since many things are different I mean geez, they have 2 bars on campus. I guess after a hard class you can go drink your worries away. I also saw a calendar done by the rowing team where the guys wore nothing. Seriously, the month of June had a picture of the team running down the track butts waving in the air. If a team tried doing that at our Uni they would have a heart attack. But it goes to charity right?

I went on a trip to Avebury and Stonehenge this past weekend. It turned out to be a beautiful day. warm and sunny. It was actually a lot more interesting and beautiful than I thought. I mean yea, I've seen the pictures but actually being there and seeing Avebury first and than Stonehenge well... it was very spiritual. I got to thinking about the people who made the sanctuaries, and what they were thinking, and why they were made, and how they even got these stones here, and what the people looked like. I mean, these places were created 2200 b.c. and over a period of 3000 yrs. These people must have really cared about this project. and well... god created these people and these specific places. think about it; who would seriously want to roll these massive stones to one place?

Luckily, Our tour guide was really knowledgeable and talked about how scientist discovered Avebury to have a strong magnetic charge and these neolithic people, having no technology of our time period, somehow felt that energy and for that very reason made it a ritualistic place or whatever myths you believe. Okay so if you haven't been to these two places than I know this is of no interest to you but I think its still fascinating. I love thinking about science, and theology, and evolution, and creationism and how they can be interconnected. Afterwards I felt very unusually refreshed like I've had this spiritual awakening. Many others felt the same way too. Maybe it was because it was sunny, or the magnetic energy, or maybe it was the experience of witnessing something that has been around for so long. How about you visit and let me know what you think.

Hmmm what else....

I signed up for a Tai Chi class. I had nothing better to do and I'm trying to meet new people and learn new things so I said why not! I've only taken one class and I feel so incredibly refreshed and peaceful. and my posture is somehow improving which is good. Afterwards, I felt my hips and body moving as one, and my back feeling sore but better. This is all good. I'm hoping after I've learned 5 more steps to get up early and walk to the beach and do it in the sun. That would be so nice.

speaking of beach. This morning I woke up and met my friend Rose before class at the beach. Walked on the sand and talked about life and school and Holland which is where she's from. It was very nice. I decided that I'm going to get up everyday and take a book and my journal and sit out on the beach and reflect. I love hearing the waves and the seagulls, and feeling the sun. I definitely don't get that back home.

I went shopping today. I really needed to buy a wetsuite for the water. You have to have one at this time of year in order to surf so I went shopping with Holly at city surf. I hate trying on wet suites by the way. They are impossible to get on and after trying on two you feel like the surface of the sun. Of course, I have to be thorough so I tried on about 5 and found one that I really liked. They had a sale going on for VERY cheap so I was lucky. I ended up buying wet shoes, gloves, and a cap for the water. yea... the water is like the puget sound until summer and then its said to be still cold. and knowing me... I'm cold even in summer so I am definitely going to need all I can to stay warm. I figured that I like the surf team, and I love the beach and water, and so surfing is primarily what I'm going to invest myself in doing. which is good. I was thinking about snowriding, sailing, and running club but I decided not too because I can do all that at home. Lets try something new! Though I have some time now I have to be careful. I already joined two societies and this surfing will take a lot of energy and time. I can't do everything which of course I want to do.

as for shopping. I noticed that when it comes to clothes things are about the same. I bought a some necessities today and some specific clothes I knew I wanted to buy while I was here . Now like everything, its double the price with the exchange rate. A decent pair of Bench Jeans or Gap jeans are marked at 35 pounds which in the states would be 70 dollars. Now I haven't seen a Lucky store (though I've seen the pants) there are stores that have very nice popular jeans/pants that are marked at about 58 pounds which is 116 dollars US which is about right thinking that Lucky or really nice Abercrombie jeans are about 100-120 dollars in the US. Now of course some people shop there but most people shop at Primark since you can get a shirt for as little as 1 pound and jeans for 10 pounds. yea, thats cheaper than old navy and ross. The ross here is actually more expensive than some stores here and thats including the exchange rate. Interesting I know! lol. You should know I hate shopping and since I've got what I wanted I am very much done.

I took a bunch of pictures while on Stonehenge and Avebury as well as the cross country competition that I volunteered at which I will be uploading when I have time. I have had quite a bit to do lately.

Wales beat England this past weekend in Ruby so I went out to celebrate with my friends. Wine street which is home to all the pubs and clubs was insane. Yes, as many of you know there were many men in Kilts. I should have had my camera. If you go on facebook to my tagged photos you will see some pics of me with my friends on our night out.

alrighty, off to catch up on my shows or I mean... do some reading!

new favorite show!

finally pt. 2

So I've finally gotten there.

I can go to the the city centre and not feel like I'm lost and walking in circles, I know where the cheap places are to shop, I've finally figured out where the rooms are in Fulton, and I know where to find specific food in the cafeteria. I finally have friends and I've bought my much needed surfing attire. I finally met wonderful people from the Christian Union, and the beach... well I've finally basked in its rays. I finally bought a wallet for all my cards, and I have officially gotten over the jet-lag. I finally know what certain words mean and am pretty much used to my classes. I'm finally settled in my room, and I finally don't get so much anxiety all the time.

Most importantly, I'm finally happy to be here.

titles

Okay so I have to mention it. I was on the t-mobile site filling in my information to top-up my phone. I was inputing my information and go to the titles section. I'm not joking, there were 12 different options: Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Dr, Rev, Sir, lord, lady, prof, capt, and major.

Crazy I know.

Oh and I also wanted to mention that I've been smacked in the face twice. yes. by doors. incidentally the doors here only open 90 degrees. This has caused me some sharp pain in my face and knees when I go to open doors and it comes flying back in my face. I try not to make a big deal about it though I feel like kicking the door and screaming "Bloody Britains!"

I don't think I'll ever get used to it.

getting settled

Rebekah's notes of the day:
  1. Men wearing coveralls are very popular right now. They where the top down so it hangs at he waste. America watch out, this could be the trend in America in several months. At least thats the direction fashion moves.
  2. I finally have a phone number. I won't be memorizing it anytime soon. its 07 98 42 35 335 to call me from the states you must exclude the 0 from my number and add the US access code 011. okay so for people in the US its: 011-798-423-5335 if you have a good plan for international calls or a phone card, or a business line *make them pay for it! lol. Then call me so we can chat.
  3. Never be afraid to ask questions
  4. Never buy chips (french fries) even from McDonalds. They are awful! Oh wow, thats why the lady looked at me weird today. I said french fries not chips. Okay good thing she didn't get mad. I don't even know if they like the French.

So it has happened. I have got a phone. I walked into t-mobile today and activated a pay as you go account because I was tired of not having a phone. I now feel more connected.
Now I don't know if the people at t-mobile are racist, hate Americans, or just provide a different kind of service then the states but I was not helped and this dude that helped me was super sketch kind of not answering my questions and not helping me at all. I went into other cell phone stores (there seemed to be several) I really like 02, orange, and virgin and was actually thinking of getting a phone from there because I was not impressed with t-mobile and vowed to discontinue service (that I didn't even have) due to the way I was treated but in the end I stuck with t-mobile because I knew them and all the study abroad students chose them as their provider because its safe.

I think its just the way they are...

so onto other news. I went shopping today. Okay I didn't go shopping really I just went to the main city centre because I hadn't seen it and the perks of shopping by yourself is that you don't have to depend on anyone so it was nice and I really enjoyed myself. I saw some really interesting things. Some street witnessing in light of Easter in front of this beautiful catholic cathedral in the middle of the square. It was gorgeous. I will definitely take pictures next time I go. The streets are amazing with cobblestone and these small tiny shops all crammed in together. It reminds me a lot of Quebec. It was very cold today which wasn't so pleasant. It was warm all day and then It got very cold I could see my breath. So I was bad and bought some clothes. Actually, I bought a pair of gray skinny pants, an emo stripped top, and I was sooo close to buying this European cut jacket but I decided I wouldn't buy anything unless I really liked it. The clothes were actually cheaper then the US even after the exchange rate which was weird but I've been told its THE cheapest place. I think its called Primark. Its cheaper then Walmart. anyway, I justify my clothes shopping in that I really needed another outfit.

So I went to join the student athletic union today. tomorrow is a running meet, which I am volunteering at, so the girl was busy so she couldn't process my card but I got the emails of people. I'm looking to join the surf team, snowriding team, and maybe kite surfing. I was going to do sailing but I decided I could do that at home and well I could snowboard too but here they take trips to Switzerland and places all over Europe for very cheap so uhm YAH! sign me up.

I decided to volunteer for the running competition because I really need to meet people since I don't know very many others. I met this girl Rose today. It was actually very nice meeting her. I had been praying for friends and she just popped up into my life. God is so good. She is from Holland and she surfs. Now how coincidental is that especially since I couldn't find any surfers. She seems really cool and were going to be partners tomorrow at the event. We really get along. She told me that she hasn't gone into the water yet but she can't wait to catch a wave. hmmm.... I think I'll have to learn the lingo.

so funny story. tonight when we were saying our names at the volunteer meeting Simon, the officer, had us recite our names. When I said mine everybody looked back. I'm going... oh come off it. You've never heard an American accent! So I got a free shirt for volunteering, I'm going to get a pint mug (interesting...) and tickets to the after party which is nice because they aren't cheap. I'm happy I went to the meeting. Things turned out good.

so I'm winding down now. I'm starting to get used to the time difference. I still feel tired all the time but its getting better. There was a bad rain storm yesterday. It kept me awake all night. I like the sound though, it reminded me of home. Not the best weather for sports but I'm not sick of it right now.

Hope things are good for you.

ps. keep in mind the time difference if you do call me. its an 8 hour difference!

here is a link to a phone help page if my directions were bad. here

and the pictures are pictures of the beach here. someone from the surf team took. these are legit.
amazing I know!
